The joint announcement from SpaceX and T-Mobile brings satellite-to-smartphone one step closer to reality. Overall, it may represent a massive accelerator for the sector.

In a live event, SpaceX's and T-Mobile's CEOs announced a common plan to roll out a direct satellite-to-smartphone service. The beta phase is said to be expected as soon as late 2023, and will deliver low speeds at first. Nevertheless, this would represent a revolutionary milestone, as it would abolish telecom "dead-zones" without having to rely on specifically-built hardware. Most importantly, such a service would mark the biggest entry of the space industry in everyday life since the inception of GPS, putting the sector under the spotlight and initiating a major transversal tailwind across the industry to build up the corresponding infrastructure.
